Following my book ‘Best friends and
Bastards’’ moderate success on the KDP select programmer on Amazon last
time I had offered it free, and in preparation for its next free days, I
decided to heed the advice of a successful fellow Aussie author. I
decided to do some self promotion. Two weeks prior to that date I
remembered what David had said: ‘don’t forget to let people know you are
going free.’

Researching on Google, I found a list of
sites where I could let readers know the freebie was on. I emailed all
of them and here is the info on the list of sites, after which I will
give you the results of my promotion.
Notify Top Sites About Your Free Kindle eBook
If you plan ahead rather than randomly
go free, you can take advantage of popular websites and blogs who cater
to readers who search for free books. Simply visit the following
websites / blogs, and send a notification containing information about
your book and the dates it is set for a free promotion. Going free is
about visibility and building a brand. These sites can help you get your
book noticed. It is recommended that you give these sites one month’s
notice.

Pixel of Ink is the number one site
every author should check out. Simply go to their Author’s Corner and
fill out the form to notify them about your free days. You can also
request to be featured on their site. Be sure to sign up for their
author’s newsletter to stay in the loop. This site has thousands of
visitors looking for your book!
Scroll to the bottom of this blog to
contact the administrator. Let them know when you are going free. They
advertise a book of the day and free Kindle books.
Simply click on the contact button, and fill out the form to let the owner of this site know when your book will be free.
Books on the Knob is another site to
contact about your upcoming free promotion. Simply click on the contact
button and send them a quick email.
Simply fill out the Indie Book List form to get your free book promotion listed on their site the first day.
Send an email to Michael: kindle at gagler dot com to request a shout out.
You are allowed to post your free
promotion on Authors on the Cheap Facebook page. You must include your
price, rating, and genre in the book description or risk having your
post removed.
This is the ONLY forum on Amazon you are
allowed to self-promote. You can post your book blurb in the threads
here, along with information about your free promotion.
You definitely want to join the
Kindleboards forums (check out the Writer’s Cafe). You are allowed to
create one ongoing thread in The Book Bazaar to promote your book. You
are only allowed to post to the thread once per week, or in response to a
reader. Be sure to read the forum’s TOC, or risk the wrath of Betsy the
Quilter. Time out your posts, so that you can post your free promotion
on the day it begins. Post your free promotion results in The Mega
Thread in the Writer’s Cafe (do not create a new thread).
Scroll to the very bottom and look for the contact button to notify this site about your free book.
Contact this blogger to get your book added to their blog and Facebook page.
Add your book to KND’s ebook tracker to
get picked up in their free ebook list. This is a huge site with a ton
of traffic. They offer paid sponsorships, but they start at $139.
More Tips for Going Free
Other ways to promote your free Kindle ebook:
- Tag your book on Amazon with the words “free ebook” and “kindle freebie” so that the search engines and some sites will pick it up.
- Tweet (use hashtags #FreeKindleBook #freebook #free)
- Post to your Facebook page.
- Create a small graphic and post it to your blog or website. Pin the graphic on Pinterest.
- Blog it, of course
- Post your promotion in writer’s forums. Make sure you follow TOC’s and only post your promotion where it is acceptable.
- Arrange with book bloggers to guest blog during your free days.
- Send a message to @kindlenews on twitter. They have over 20,000 followers.

Remember that last time I went free for two days without promoting it I
sold (or gave away) 2,253 books in the USA and 1,863 in the UK. Sales

500 downloads in total! My kindle version eBook hit number 11 out of 1
million books on Amazon. Even more exciting were the sales that followed
