Blogger has announced their new search engine related features
a few days back. These new SEO related features are very beneficial for
a blog to implement, one of them is the Custom Redirect option.
Basically this option would allow you to redirect visitors from one page
to another. Blogger allows you to create 302 redirects which are used
to specify that a webpage is moved temporarily.
What's a Redirect? How it can be Useful?
It
redirects a visitor, who tends to visit a specific URL, to another URL.
Blogger allow its users to create internal redirects i.e visitors
landing on a page or post on your blog can be redirected towards
another.
How a Redirect can be Useful?
Redirect
can be useful in some cases when you've got a post written on your blog
and later you need to delete it because you wrote another updated post
on that particular topic. Now if you'd delete that, visitors landing on
that page would get 404 error and you may lose readerships. To avoid
that, you can redirect the URL of you old post to the new one. Blogger
Redirection tool can also be used to create shortlinks.
How to add Custom Redirects?
- There must be two URLs.
- Get the relative paths of these URLs.e.g The relate path to http://www.mybloggertips.com/2012/03/customize-search-preferences-complete.html would be /2012/03/customize-search-preferences-complete.html
- Go to Blogger >> Settings >> Search Preferences >> Errors & Redirects >> Custom Redirects.
- Add the From and To Fields and click save and then save changes.
